چکیده

It has been suggested in the literature of social psychology that consumers that search exhaustively for the best option of a product in the market -called maximizerseventually feel worse than those that just look for something good enough -in turn, satisficers-. We address this striking phenomenon using a formal framework for consumer rational choice relaying on time allocation which accounts both for maximizers and satisficers. By means of a numerical analysis of the model for a case study with real market prices, we show that satisficers that do not check all available options typically are better off than maximizers exploring all market alternatives, despite maximizers get a better deal in the market.

A Satisficing Choice Model

While the assumption of utility-maximizing consumers has been challenged for decades, empirical applications of alternative choice rules are still very recent. We add to this growing body of literature by proposing a model based on Simon’s idea of a “satisficing” decision maker. In contrast to previous models (including recent models implementing alternative choice rules), satisficing depends o...

Development of a Genetic Algorithm for Advertising Time Allocation Problems

Commercial advertising is the main source of income for TV channels and allocation of advertising time slots for maximizing broadcasting revenues is the major problem faced by TV channel planners. In this paper, the problem of scheduling advertisements on prime-time of a TV channel is considered. The problem is formulated as a multi-unit combinatorial auction based mathematical model. This is a...

An Optimization Model for Financial Resource Allocation Towards Seismic Risk Reduction

This paper presents a study on determining the degree of effectiveness of earthquake risk mitigation measures and how to prioritize such efforts in developing countries. In this paper a model is proposed for optimizing funds allocation towards risk reduction measures (building retrofitting) and reconstruction process after potential earthquakes in a regional level. The proposed model seeks opti...

An ABM Approach to Understanding the Impacts of Satisficing Behavior

Satisficing behavior is one of the most important subjects in consumer behavior studies. Satisficing consumers select any affordable bundle of items with utility larger than their satisfaction threshold. This contrasts to maximizing behavior, where the consumer selects the bundle of items with the highest possible utility within his or her budget constraint. The authors hypothesize that, all el...

Redundancy allocation problem for k-out-of-n systems with a choice of redundancy strategies

To increase the reliability of a specific system, using redundant components is a common method which is called redundancy allocation problem (RAP). Some of the RAP studies have focused on k-out-of-n systems. However, all of these studies assumed predetermined active or standby strategies for each subsystem. In this paper, for the first time, we propose a k-out-of-<em...
